Peter Rousseeuw awarded the 2024 Noether Distinguished Scholar Award for nonparametric statistics

Peter Rousseeuw has received the 2024 Gottfried E. Noether Distinguished Scholar Award of the American Statistical Association (ASA). This is the main award for nonparametric statistics, which rarely goes to a European. The citation reads ``Dr. Peter Rousseeuw has made significant contributions to robust estimation, innovative model-free cluster analysis, and the development of statistical depth functions. His work, renowned for advancing methodology, creating algorithms, and its broad application, has significantly shaped the landscape of statistical analysis, demonstrating the profound impact of his research on both theoretical and practical aspects of nonparametric statistics.'' The former awardees are listed here.

The award ceremony took place on August 7, 2024 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Portland, Oregon. In that session Peter Rousseeuw gave a presentation on `Robustness and Distance Correlation'. The Early Career Scholar Awards for researchers under 35 were presented to Edgar Dobriban (Wharton School) and Lucas Janson (Harvard).

Peter Rousseeuw has made significant contributions to robust estimation, innovative model-free cluster analysis, and the development of statistical depth functions. His work, renowned for advancing methodology, creating algorithms, and its broad application, has significantly shaped the landscape of statistical analysis, demonstrating the profound impact of his research on both theoretical and practical aspects of nonparametric statistics.''
